Kitchen Stewarding

11:29 Posted by Unknown No comments

Yes! You might be the boss or you might be the employee – it doesn’t matter to us. We write articles with all of you in mind, but you have probably noticed that we have articles for supervisors and stewards as well. Over the years, I’ve met people who have interesting views about their bosses. Some stewards love their boss; others generally don’t like their boss. In truth, it is not really that easy to be the stewarding supervisor or the boss. There are so many things that you have to deal with. Often, supervisors struggle between being kind and doing the right thing.
For instance, how do you deal with an employee who often comes to work late because she has a baby and she can’t leave the baby with just anyone? She has to wait for her husband who often pulls an extra shift so they can pay the rent. It is a supervisor’s dilemma whether to deal with the situation with kindness or not. Sometimes, bosses are forced in situations where they are forced to do things which others may perceive as unkind. Unfortunately, there is often a fine line between being kind and being irresponsible. Sometimes, you can be a good boss but not necessarily a kind boss. Sometimes, you can be a kind boss too while still being a good boss.
Here are a few things you can do as a kind stewarding supervisor:
1. Help your employees out when they find themselves in a bind. This does not sit well for most people particularly to cynics. Contrary to what others think, however, people do not abuse or take advantage of the privilege. Still, it is advisable that you don’t make a habit out of this. It is nice to lend money or guarantee loans every now and then. A loan guarantor can have a huge impact on the terms of the loan. Unfortunately, you will be sticking your neck out for your employee, so you might want to make sure that you will be taking the risk for someone who is responsible and who deserves the help.

2. Give an employee a break. If you have a good employee who suddenly starts reporting late for work or sleeping when he is supposed to be working, you might want to have a good talk with him. He might be having some personal problems that are affecting his work. You might reconsider suspending him or firing him. These things could worsen his situation. You should consider helping out or give the guy a break. Give your employees time to fix their problems. If one of your employees lost a loved one, you might consider giving him enough time to grieve. But how time should you give an employee? That is up to your discretion. And that is also a topic we’d probably cover later on.

3. Do nice things for your employees. Remember birthdays or at least take note of birthdays. You could have a Celebrants section in your corkboard where people can refer to. Visit your sick stewards in hospitals. Give baby gifts. These are simple things that you can do to show that you are a kind boss. These are the things that you can do to build a good working environment and create a positive vibe as well.

It’s tough being a kind stewarding supervisor, but there are things that you can do in order to be a kind boss while still being a good boss.

Not everyone works for a “great boss”, an awesome stewarding supervisor. Sometimes, you end up with a really difficult boss. We all have experienced working for one at some point of our careers. Some bosses can be really abusive. Some have experienced being verbally or emotionally bullied by their own bosses.

If you are working for a difficult stewarding supervisor, it is hard to like your job. If you are being constantly bullied by your boss at work, you will generally develop an intense dislike or even hatred for your supervisor. Is there something that you can do in order to deal with a difficult boss? Basically, changing your view will affect how you see your boss as well. He may continue to be difficult, but you will be able to deal with him better.

Understand Your Boss

It might help you deal better with your boss if you understand him. People often act and react in the manner that they do for reasons they think are valid. Their reasons may not be right, but their feelings, thoughts and ideas are valid. Your stewarding supervisor may have things going on in his life that may drive him to act the way that he does. Compassion works well in this case.

It is also important that you attempt to see things from your boss’ point of view. You may feel that he is wrong, but then your perspective changes when you try to see things from another person’s point of view. By doing this, you will be able to see your boss differently as well. You need to understand where your boss is coming from. What are his objectives? Why does he put pressure on you? What are his long suits? What are his weak spots? Get to know your boss and understand him.

Focus On His Positive Traits

This is quite hard. It is not easy to like someone who bullies you every day, but it will help if you will focus on his positive traits. For every single thing that you don’t like about your boss, find something that you like about him. This creates a general neutral opinion. You don’t have to love him or even like him, but this will help you understand him and possibly stop hating him.

Your boss is human. He may bully you. He may be very aggressive, but if you see him as a human being, he will not be powerful as he may seem to you. Everyone has their insecurities and your stewarding supervisor probably has his as well. In fact, studies show that people in power tend to behave aggressively if they feel insecure about their ability to hang on to their position or power. Perhaps, it’ll help if you give your boss sincere compliments. This may not solve the problem, but this can definitely lighten things up.

Evaluate Yourself

It always takes two to tango. It is important that you also take a good look at yourself. Are you contributing to the problem? Are your boss’ complaints against you valid? You are part of your working relationship with your boss. If you want your stewarding supervisor to treat you better, you should also make sure that you are doing your job properly and you are bringing a great attitude into your workplace.

So, are you having problems with your boss? Have you experienced working with a bully? How did you handle it? What can you recommend to other stewards when it comes to dealing with a difficult boss?
It doesn’t matter what you do or where you work – like everyone else, you have probably wondered how to get a raise and be promoted faster. Do you feel that all your hard work is seemingly unrecognized? Do you feel that your stewarding supervisor hardly notices how well you do your job? Do you want to get a raise? Do you want to get promoted? If you answer yes to all these questions then you really should consider our tips on how you can land that promotion and get a bigger salary.

Ask Yourself – Am I Working for the Right Company?

Before you start wondering how to get a raise, you have to consider one thing – where you work. You have to remember that it matters who your boss is and where you report for work on a daily basis. If the hotel or restaurant you are working in hardly meets their target profit, then you won’t probably get a raise. More so, you won’t probably get a promotion. Restaurants that hardly get customers will likely maintain their status quo, barely profiting but barely losing profits as well. You might want to consider applying to other restaurants or hotels. Do your research. Look for high-growth establishments and see if they are hiring. If you do decide to apply to another establishment, you should also consider the kind of person you would be working for. You should take note of their working environment as well.

Develop the Right Attitude to Get the Job

Your skills do not determine your chances of landing that promotion. Your attitude will be considered as well. Do you have the right attitude for the job? Do people like you? Do you readily help people? Are you a cheerful person? Do you have a positive attitude about things? These things matter and these are the things that your superiors will consider when they do decide whether to consider you for a promotion or not. You need to be able to handle stress well. The higher your position is, the bigger your responsibilities will be. You should be able to handle stress and pressure well.

Create a Positive and Attractive Image

A steward’s job is not easy and it is definitely not clean, but external appearance is still important. It is amazing how many people are overlooked and disregarded because of their appearance. It is important that you present a positive and attractive appearance. Do not come to work wearing the same clothes you were wearing yesterday. If you want to be the boss, you need to look the part as well.

Work Hard!

You need to be dedicated to your job. If you want to know how to get a raise, this is it – you have to work hard. This means coming to work earlier than most, working hard and staying late if you have to. You have to know every aspect of your job and you have to show your dedication to your company. You need to be a productive employee.

Ask for It!

If you are still wondering how to get a raise or get the promotion, you should definitely consider asking for it. Schedule an appointment with your boss or maybe you could do an impromptu visit. Have a talk with your supervisor. Let him know why you feel you should get a raise or why you should get promoted. It doesn’t hurt to ask, just make sure that you do this in respectful and intelligent manner.
